Travel down into the earth and back in time!
The times when coal was mined from under the Nösslachjoch and the silver mines in Schwaz were thriving are long over. But why not use this opportunity to join us on a journey into the mining history of the Tyrol?Travel down into the earth and back in time.
Gries Mining Center
Mines
Over 300 million years ago, deeper-lying rock layers were pushed up and over younger layers of rock nearer to the Earth’s crust. This phenomenon has occurred only twice in Austria, at Pack between Carinthia and Styria and at the Nösslachjoch.
Visitors are given the chance to experience what life on Earth would have been like 300 million years ago. As well as visiting a typical coal forest, guests can examine fossils and learn how coal was mined and transported. The entrance to the centre is a former mine shaft from which a natural spring flows. The experience is rounded off by panoramic views and the stunning natural beauty of the Nösslacher mountain. For more information about the individual attractions, please consult the information board at the Nösslachhütte hut. Hiking time: 1 hour.
