The first settlements in the area date back to the early Bronze Age, as has been confirmed by a number of finds on the Schlosshügel. The Roman road station with the name “Matreium” was also an important staging post on the North-South route. At one time, more than 70 Imperial trains run through Matrei on their way to Rome.
Especially characteristic of the area is the nature conservation area in the west known as “Serles - Blaser - Zuckerhütl”. Because of its shape, the Serles, popularly referred to as the “High Altar of Tyrol”, is one of the best-known and most distinctive mountain peaks around Innsbruck. In the heart of the nature conservation area, at the foot of the Serles, lies the highest monastery in central Europe: Maria Waldrast. The realm of adventure around the monastery includes an extensive network of hiking trails with the two themed trails named the “Quellenweg” (source) and the “Schöpfungsweg” (creation). Culinary delights are provided by the “Ochsen Alm” and, of course, the monastery inn with its large sun terrace.
In the east of the region, high above Pfons, is the “Bildungshaus St. Michael”, which offers a wide range of cultural events all year round. The area around the Bildungshaus is a place of natural power with stunning views over the Wipptal region all the way to Innsbruck. The Pfons Alpine huts round off the delights the region has to offer, pampering their guests with traditional and regional delicacies.
A special winter highlight is the 5-km-long illuminated natural toboggan run of Maria Waldrast, which invites fans of the sport to enjoy moonlit tobogganing parties. In early December, the customs and traditions of the Christmas market draw all-comers into the centre of Matrei. On the occasion of the “Matrei Operettas and Craft Market” the local craft businesses throw open their doors, and the beautifully lit village centre is transformed by many traditional music groups into a place steeped in pre-Christmas romance.
