The market town of Steinach am Brenner at just under 1,050 metres of altitude is situated 26 km south of the state capital of Innsbruck and one of the central villages in the Wipptal holiday region.
Due to its central location, Steinach is the perfect starting point to spend an active holiday and has a lot to offer in both summer and winter.
Steinach owes its existence to its central location on the north-south route on the Brenner pass. According to legend, the name “Steinach” comes from when St. Valentine who was chased away with stones by the local pagan residents of the region. Some famous people have also dwelled in Steinach, such as Kurfürst Max Emanuel, and Andreas Hofer who often had his headquarters in the market town. Steinach is an artistic place and some famous artists, such as the painter Martin Knoller (1725-1804), were born here.
“Multifunctionality” is the motto of the Bergeralm, which is the most beloved destination in Steinach throughout the year for both the young and the old.
In the summer, bikers get their money’s worth. With the Bergeralm gondola lift, bikers can easily reach the Tyrol Bike Park and have adrenaline surges on the routes back into the valley. Bergeralm is also an ideal destination for families. On pleasant days, the Bärenbachl Water and Adventure World at the intermediate station invites kids to play and have fun in its waters. Hikers can easily shorten their ascent using the gondola lift and enjoy landscape on beautiful hiking trails at high altitudes.
The Bergeralm Ski Arena also has plenty to offer in winter: In addition to 28 kilometres of downhill slopes, there is a dedicated children’s and practice area, an illuminated toboggan run and the internationally-famous “Night Ride” where Steinach turns night into day on 9 kilometres of floodlight slopes. Ski schools, small cafés, après-ski bars, and restaurants complete the offer.
Apart from the Bergeralm, the market town of Steinach also offers variety and fun for the entire family. Refreshment can be found on hot days in the Steinach public swimming pool. Directly next to, you can find tennis and beach volleyball courts. In winter, the entire family can get their money’s worth while skating in the indoor ice rink or try out ice-stick shooting at a match.
