Snowshoe hiking

Healthy exercise in harmonising tranquillity

add to travel guide

Trudging through the unspoiled winter landscape on snowshoes is one of the most revitalising and healthy alternatives to skiing. Link your body and soul into one entity and step into a calming atmosphere by relaxing and slowing yourself down. The possibilities are endless - from sport in the mountains to gentle winter hiking pleasure.

Uncomplicated and professional - guided snowshoe hikes
From the end of December to the middle of March, the Wipptal Tourist Board organises a guided snowshoe hike every Tuesday with mountain hiking guide Wolfgang. Depending on the fitness levels of the participants, visitors can try out a taster snowshoe hike or - for well-trained or ambitious guests - an extended snowshoe trek. After a short technical briefing, you are ready to go. Warmly wrapped up in winter clothes and equipped with snowshoes and hiking poles (that are complimentary to rent, by the way), you head out into winter mountain landscape. A stop-off at one of the rustic huts is something not to be missed. Steaming dumpling soup, Tyrolean ham, cheese and tasty "Kaiserschmarrn" shredded pancakes await snowshoe hikers.

Indulgence triathlon in the Navis Valley
A highlight for the winter is the indulgence triathlon that takes place every Wednesday to the rear of the Navis Valley, whereby participants can enjoy three very different disciplines: snowshoe hiking, tobogganing and tasting sessions with local delicacies and fine spirits. A very special kind of "Endurance sport", just for connoisseurs. A free transfer from Steinach and Matrei takes the "Indulgence triathletes" to the starting point in the Navis Valley and back again after an eventful day. That way you don't have worry about driving!

On your way in the mountains
We have put together a selection of tour suggestions for wonderful snowshoe hikes in the Wipptal holiday region. Snowshoes and hiking poles can be rented free of charge in the Wipptal Tourist Board in Steinach. Regardless of whether you are traveling of your own accord or part of a group, please also find out about the latest avalanche risks in your chosen region in advance or seek the accompaniment of an experienced mountain hiking guide. Your safety is our priority.
