THE OBERNBERG VALLEY
The approximately 8-kilometre-long Obernbergtal valley impresses with its unspoilt nature and blends into the Nößlachjoch - Obernberger See - Tribulaune nature reserve. The quiet side valley in the Wipptal valley branches off to the southwest at Gries am Brenner and leads via Vinaders to Obernberg.
As soon as the road enters the Obernberg Valley, you’re accompanied by the rushing waters of the clear stream, which flows from Lake Obernberg through the entire valley and eventually joins the Sill River at Gries . The northern side of the valley, the sunny side, is covered with larch trees up to about 1,900 meters, and the meadows in the sparse forest are mowed once a year through laborious manual work. It features flora typical of these larch meadows, such as blue gentians, primroses, and orchids.
At the head of the valley rises the striking Obernberger Tribulaun, reaching an altitude of 2,780 meters. This majestic mountain is not the only one in the Obernberg Valley that beckons hikers to undertake a challenging mountain tour. The Obernberg Valley offers it all: easier hikes, such as to the Sattelbergalm and on to the Sattelberg, a circular hike around the natural gem Obernberger See or to the Lichtsee, but also more challenging mountain tours such as the ascent of the Rötenspitze or the Grubenkopf.
So hiking routes of varying difficulty levels aren’t just found in summer; in winter, too, toboggan runs lead to Obernberger See and the Sattelbergalm, as well as ski touring routes are sure to delight winter sports enthusiasts.
