THE SCHMIRNTAL
The beautiful Schmirntal valley in the Tux Alps flows into St. Jodok from the east. As part of the St. Jodok - Schmirn & Valsertal trio, the village at 1,400 m in the Wipptal valley is an Eldorado for mountaineers and has been part of the Alpine Club's elite circle of mountaineering villages since 2012.
Once you have made the ascent via the road to Schmirn, you will see a narrow valley lined with striking mountain peaks to the left and right. As you drive through, some people are already planning their next ski or mountain tour. The whole valley is lined with settlements and lonely farms until you reach the end of the valley in Kasern, where you seem to have arrived in another time. This is also where the family-run Alpengasthof Kasern is located. The house was built in 1902 by a man from Schmirn who had emigrated to America for a while to make his fortune as a gold prospector.
The landmark of the municipality of Schmirn is the "Kalte Herberge" pilgrimage church in a forest clearing, which is worth a visit in both summer and winter via a leisurely hiking trail. From the starting point of this hike in Toldern, the view of the 3,476-metre-high glaciated Olperer is particularly striking .
The highest municipality in the Wipptal valley is particularly famous among ski tourers . Countless peaks and untouched powder snow slopes magically attract alpinists and those who want to become one in the winter months.
