MOUNTAINEERING VILLAGES

St. Jodok, Schmirn & Valsertal and the Gschnitztal valley

The Wipptal vacation region between Innsbruck and Brenner is home to two mountaineering villages of the Austrian Alpine Club: Gschnitztal in the Stubai Alps and St. Jodok, Schmirn- & Valsertal in the Zillertal Alps. The motto here is less, but better!

The villages united in the Mountaineering Villages initiative are pioneers of alpinism in their regions. This is why the mountains and mountaineering have a high status in the cultural self-image of the locals and guests. Here, the awareness of the necessary harmony between nature and man is still alive and natural boundaries are respected. All mountaineering villages are characterized by their small size and tranquillity, their location in the Alpine region, their harmonious townscape, their Alpine history, their living traditions and their strong Alpine expertise.

Mountaineering villages are places that have consciously opted for sustainable, independent and self-confident development. The conditions are therefore ideal, as all these principles have always been practiced by the two mountaineering villages in the Wipptal. That's why it seemed like the absolutely logical step to be awarded the title. In every mountaineering village there are partner businesses that stand for the values that a mountaineering village embodies . They want to cater to the needs of active and mountain sports enthusiasts and offer, for example, an early, regional breakfast, thermos flasks of tour tea, winter maps or a tour library in the house.

From leisurely circular hikes to summit conquests - experience the peace and quiet of the mountains in two untouched, very original side valleys of the Wipptal, where the landscape is strongly characterized by mountain farming culture.

St. Jodok, Schmirn & Valsertal

Mountaineering village with the highest mountain in the region, the Olperer, and probably the two most beautiful valley heads in Tyrol. In winter, it impresses above all with the large number of possible ski tours with powder snow right into spring and in summer with mountain tours of all levels of difficulty.
