CLIMBING & VIA FERRATA
A climbing vacation in the Tyrolean Wipptal means enjoying via ferratas, climbing gardens, bouldering crags and multi-pitch routes in the untouched nature of the mountain valleys. If the weather doesn't play along, the basecamp climbing and competence center in Matrei is the perfect place to train a few moves indoors.
A true climbing paradise can be found on the Stafflacher Wand in the mountaineering village of St. Jodok. Here, via ferrata climbers will find a challenging route (difficulty B-C), sport climbers a varied climbing garden and pleasure climbers 10 multi-pitch routes. And those who want to prepare for the ice climbing season will find what they are looking for in the dry-tooling area. An absolute plus point: access to all routes is just a 15-minute walk from the train station in St. Jodok and further into the valley in Valsertal there are climbing gardens with more than 100 routes as well as great alpine classics such as the Fußstein Nordkante.
But the other climbing spots are also worth a visit. In Obernberg there is a beautifully situated climbing garden at the end of the valley. In the Gschnitztal valley, you can reach the little pilgrimage church of St. Magdalena with a snack station at 1,661 m via a normal route or a family-friendly via ferrata. Several multi-pitch routes and another climbing garden also start from here. If you want to get an overview of the extensive climbing opportunities in the Wipptal, you can find all the routes in the climbing guide "Wipptal - Sportklettern südlich von Innsbruck" (available from bookshops and the TVB information office in Steinach).

You can hire via ferrata sets and climbing helmets at the TVB information office in Steinach during opening hours (Mon - Fri 08:30 - 12:00 and 14:00 - 17:00) or at basecamp Matrei.
