ST. JODOK, SCHMIRN & VALSER VALLEY

The villages of St. Jodok, Schmirn- & Valsertal, which have belonged to this illustrious circle since 2012, are early mountaineering villages. In addition to a well-maintained, well-marked network of hiking trails for leisure hikers, the mountaineering village also offers a wide range of climbing options, high mountain tours and multi-day hut hikes. The alpine place of longing par excellence is also located here - the highest mountain in the Wipptal - the Olperer (3,476m).

The link to the mountaineering village is the small village of St. Jodok. The Schmirn and Vals valleys branch off from there. The starting points for the alpine classics of the Wipptal region are located at the head of the valley. But you can actually hike and climb from any point here. The Stafflacher Wand in St. Jodok is also a true climbing paradise with a via ferrata, climbing garden, multi-pitch routes and a dry-tooling area.

If you don't feel quite ready to climb the Olperer yet, you can explore and marvel at the mighty Olperer massif on somewhat more leisurely day hikes to the surrounding peaks or on multi-day hut hikes . The Smugglers' Trail or the Peter Habeler Tour offer opportunities for this.

In winter, fantastic deep-snow slopes attract ski tourers, but there is also a large selection of routes and winter hiking trails for snowshoe and winter hikers in the mountaineering village. In keeping with the motto "exercise under your own steam", the Schmirntal also offers 8 km of cross-country ski trails and there are snow-sure toboggan runs in both valleys.

School of the mountain pasture

As part of the "School of the Alpine Pasture", guests of the mountaineering village have the unique opportunity to get to know Alpine life in Valsertal. Accompanied by mountain pasture instructors, interested visitors learn about the activities that are carried out on a mountain pasture and on the mountain meadows. In addition to scythe mowing and haymaking on the mountain pastures, this also includes building sloping fences and dry stone walls. A cooking course for mountain farmer dishes rounds off the offer.

As a further course in cooperation with the Schule der Alm, you can complete a 3-day herbal course in the Alpine flower garden in Schmirn in spring and fall. Here, old herbal knowledge is passed on and a lot is learned about the healing power of herbs.
