ADVENT IN THE WIPPTAL VALLEY
When the cold season begins, the lights shine particularly bright and warm, because then it's Advent. In the Wipptal Valley, this time is celebrated with many customs and festivals. From the St. Nicholas procession to the baking of traditional Christmas cookies and Advent markets.
The heart of Advent is all about coming together. The cozy atmosphere creates a space for fellowship and reflection. People gather to celebrate Tyrolean Christmas traditions and enjoy each other’s company. You won’t find any hustle and bustle here—in the Wipptal, Advent is a quiet and contemplative time.
The highlight is the Tyrolean Operetta Advent, where on two dates the historic village center of Matrei is transformed into a pre-Christmas stage.
Various craft workshops open their doors to visitors, regional producers sell their products at stands in the historic buildings, and you can treat yourself to culinary delights. Musical performances are also held at all the stalls.
But various Advent events also take place in many other corners of the Wipptal. Festive sounds of traditional Christmas carols fill the churches, hikers stroll through the village on a torchlight hike, and nature lovers look forward to the many recreational opportunities such as skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and much more.
Christmas Market at Trautson Castle
Built in 1221, Trautson Castle in Mühlbachl—one of the Wipptal Valley’s most significant historical landmarks—serves as the atmospheric backdrop for the Advent market every year. Regional delicacies such as Kiachl and mulled wine, handmade gifts, and festive brass band music invite visitors to linger.
