MERAN
This South Tyrolean town lies to the northwest of Bolzano. After a journey of just under 2 hours (the city can also be easily visited by train from the Brenner Pass), you end up in another world. Here you can really immerse yourself in the Mediterranean lifestyle of Italy. The fine climate, the historic buildings and the surrounding castles and gardens invite you to take a stroll and explore.
Merano is located in the Adige Valley and is the second largest city in South Tyrol. Formerly the provincial capital and more recently known as a spa town, there is plenty to see. Situated in a basin that provides a Mediterranean climate, Merano is the starting point for many hikes. But Merano 2000 also has something to offer for a "leisurely" day in the mountains: take the lift up to the Waidmannalm and the summer toboggan run back down to the valley.
Just below the valley station is Trauttmansdorff Castle with its 12-hectare botanical garden. You can admire a wide variety of plants over an almost endless area. Empress Sisi resided in the castle from time to time. Merano owes its international reputation as a spa town to her. Once you've done enough walking and exploring, you can treat yourself to culinary delights in a bar or restaurant or end the day in the Merano thermal baths, the Merano arcades (shopping street) or the Wandelhalle - a small gallery decorated with works of art.
