A magical hike through the winter forest by torchlight

The snow-covered mountain landscape is already bathed in dusky light. The sun has already sent its last rays over the mountain peaks some time ago. A small group of people gather in Schmirn in the Toldern district at the foot of the mighty Olperer. A unique experience awaits them: a torchlight hike through the snow-covered winter landscape that takes them into an enchanted world.

The already noticeable cold is pushed into the background by the anticipation of the upcoming experience. The participants are equipped with warm jackets, hats and gloves and are ready to discover the beauty of nature in its wintry guise. The hike is accompanied by Melanie, a local mountain hiking guide who knows the area inside out and will lead the group on this atmospheric evening.

As the first torches are lit, the warm, golden light flickers on the snow and conjures up a special atmosphere. Our small group makes its way into the small Wildlahner side valley - also the starting point for some of the most scenic and beautiful ski tours in the Wipptal. Footsteps crunch in the snow and the air is filled with excited whispers and laughter. After about 10 minutes of walking, we turn right towards the forest, where we continue along a snow-covered forest path.

During the hike, Melanie tells us stories from the region. Time flies on this twilight evening, because we have already reached the highlight of the hike: emerging from the forest, a small clearing opens up and we see the Kalte Herberge pilgrimage church - the landmark of the municipality of Schmirn. Legend has it that a shepherd saw a beautiful woman with a child sitting under a large spruce tree on a stormy autumn day. Full of compassion, the shepherd called out to her: There you have a cold shelter! Then the woman disappeared with the child. After some time, people believed they had recognized the Mother of God in her and hung a copy of Lucas Cranach's Mariahilf painting on a tree in her honour. As early as 1730, a simple wooden chapel was built on this site, which was soon replaced by a brick church. The "Kalte Herberge" has always been a popular excursion destination in summer and winter to seek peace and quiet in nature.

After a short break with warming tea and stimulating conversation, the night-time hike continues. During this time, we forget all about everyday life and the hustle and bustle that awaits us in the valley. As the torches gradually begin to go out, we approach the starting point again. At the end, we go for a warming drink in the Gasthof Olpererblick and reflect on the enchanting evening.
