MATREI AM BRENNER
The market town of Matrei lies at around 1,000 m above sea level, is just 16 km south of Innsbruck and enjoys great rail links to the provincial capital. It is the northernmost vacation resort in the Wipptal vacation region and is a real eye-catcher, not only historically but also in culinary terms.
The "Matreium" road station was already an important point on the north-south route in Roman times. More than 70 imperial trains once marched through Matrei on their way to Rome. The beautifully painted facades and traditional inns and hotels along the road, which also have plenty to offer in terms of cuisine, still bear witness to this historical importance today. Don't miss a visit to Matrei-Trautson Castle with its impressive suspension bridge over the Sill gorge.
The nearby pilgrimage site of Maria Waldrast was once and still is an important place of power. The highest monastery in Central Europe is located at the foot of the striking Serles mountain and in the middle of the nature reserve in the Wipptal valley. Nature lovers get their money's worth here in all seasons: hiking on themed trails or to the surrounding peaks, cross-country skiing on the high-altitude trails, winter hiking or snowshoeing across snow-covered mountain meadows or tobogganing on the longest natural toboggan run in the region. If you want to switch off completely, you can spend the night at Maria Waldrast - by the way, you won't find a cell phone network there...
